Mamie Simmons

It is with great sadness that I must share the news of the passing of Mamie Simmons on Tuesday 1st April.

Mamie passed away peacefully at St Cuthberts Hospice with her family by her side.

Mamie was a Liberal Democrat Councillor for over 25 years serving the Framwellgate Moor and Newton Hall division at all levels, initially as a member of Durham City Council, then Durham County Council and finally for many years as a Framwellgate Moor parish councillor. She also served as the Mayor of Durham City from 2010-2011.

Mamie’s passion all her life was the wellbeing and welfare of children and young people. As a retired Headteacher she devoted her time to all things children related, serving on numerous school governing bodies, the local authorities fostering panel and for the last four years Chair of the Corporate Parenting panel, which she was immensely proud of.

Mamie was due to stand down this May and enjoy a well deserved retirement, she will be sadly missed by many as both a community advocate, colleague and a friend.

Funeral arrangements will be posted when we have them.

Leader, Liberal Democrat Group, Durham County Council
County Councillor for Framwellgate Moor and Newton Hall
