Carol Woods at No2ID stall in Durham

City of Durham Liberal Democrat candidate Carol Woods today joined the non-partisan No2ID group in Durham to campaign against ID cards.

No2ID are a non-political campaign group who want to end the 'database state' such as the use of biometric passports and ID cards.

The London School of Economics estimate the cost of ID cards to be between £10bn and £20bn.

A long-time campaigner against ID cards, Carol Woods said:

"The cost of ID cards is estimated at as much as £20 billion. They are expensive and ineffective. The money would be much better spent getting more police on our streets.

"Labour are still desperately clinging to ID cards despite their clear unpopularity. This shows stale thinking from a stale government.

"They are now reduced to inventing baseless scare stories about jobs rather than defend their record on civil liberties which, is frankly, a disgrace. This the most authoritarian Government in living memory."
