Government plans to award the contract for building new high speed trains to North East based Hitachi-led Agility Trains consortium have been welcomed. The decision to award the Intercity Express Programme (IEP) to Hitachi has been hailed as the biggest investment in the North East since Nissan.
MASSIVE BOOST FOR NORTH EAST JOBS
The development is likely to generate as many as 4000 new jobs to the region - as Hitachi have announced that they intend to source supplies locally as well. Cllr Nigel Martin, Lib Dem leader on Durham County Council said: "This is fantastic news for the North East. It could be a real boost to many local people."
This follows on from the news that Nissan are to receive Government grants for the development of electric cars in the North East.
Cllr Martin added: "With this and the Nissan news, plus the announcement that steel-making is to return to Teesside, it's clear that the Lib Dems in Government are showing real faith in our region and its future."
