Lib Dem City Centre Councillor David Freeman has welcomed the decision of the Coalition Government to examine the problems created by the 'binge drinking culture' that residents in Durham can see virtually every night.
Cllr Freeman believes the Labour Government's 2003 Licensing Act was a huge mistake which has led to an ever increasing number of city centre premises seeking late licence extensions, allowing them to regularly open till 2.00 am and on some occasions 4.00 am.
Cllr Freeman said 'Labour had believed that 24 hour licensing would create a 'café culture' but it has predictably instead created wide scale anti social behaviour in Durham City. The complete review about to be undertaken by the Coalition Government is therefore desperately needed.'
