Liberal Democrat candidate for Durham City Carol Woods is calling for better pay and homes for army servicemen and women.
Carol said:
"The Labour Government sent the Armed Forces to an illegal war without a fair deal.
"A new recruit in the army can expect less that £14,000 a year and there is not enough equipment for frontline troops but there are too many officers, for example almost two admirals for every warship. This is appalling and shows waste and unfairness in the Ministry of Defence.
"The Liberal Democrats would bring the basic pay of the lowest paid soldiers in line with that of police constables and double the number of forces' family homes refurbished each year.
"Troops fighting in terrible conditions half-way across the world should not have to risk their lives for others without a decent wage or home for their loved ones at home. It shows a fundamental lack of respect for the work they are expected to do. We need to change that, and support the Liberal Democrat pledge for fair pay for troops."
