The Conservative General Election campaign in Durham has been ridiculed by the local press after announcing they planned to "stop the Lib Dem-run city Council". As everyone in Durham knows, the City Council was abolished over a year ago.
Carol Woods, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Durham said, "This shows just how out of touch the Conservatives are in Durham. They only show up at election time and they have no idea of the issues facing local people or about what is going on here.
"They haven't had a single councillor in Durham for 25 years so perhaps we should excuse them for being behind the times.
"This misguided attack also reflects a clear trend in this election of both Labour and Conservatives aiming their fire at the Lib Dems in Durham.
"They have formed an unwholly alliance against us because they recognise the challenge we offer to the status quo.
"However, it is clear from the people I am speaking to on the doorstep that their tactics are failing. People here know that it is the Lib Dems who offer the only chance for change in Durham. A vote for any other party will just mean more of the same let down for local residents."
