Carol Woods and the Lib Dems in Durham have today launched their biggest ever General Election campaign. After 75 years of Labour MPs in Durham, Carol Woods is within touching distance of a historic victory here.
On the day that Gordon Brown finally confirmed the General Election date, the Lib Dem candidate Carol Woods said,
"This is Durham's chance to vote for change.
"We have been let down and neglected by Labour for far too long. Everyone knows the Conservatives cannot win here, this election is a straight choice between more of the same from Labour or a fresh start with the Lib Dems.
"My campaign will focus on contrasting the failure of Labour and the fairness offered by the Lib Dems. Unemployment in Durham has doubled in the last 18 months and police numbers have fallen every year since our current MP was elected. Labour have hit people with tax rise after tax rise and we have had to endure the deepest recession in modern history.
"The Lib Dems offer a real, positive alternative. My campaign priorities are to work for more jobs, more police and lower taxes. It is time that Durham has an MP who put local people ahead of party loyalty.
"Speaking to people on the doorstep, it is clear that local residents are ready to vote for change. This election offers us the best chance in a generation to really change Durham for the better."
