Durham's Labour County Council have refused to support a Lib Dem motion supporting the efforts to end fuel poverty in our area.
Lib Dems in Parliament have put forward a new bill which would seek to end fuel poverty - saving thousands of lives each year.
Group Leader for the Lib Dems in Durham, Nigel Martin, asked that the Council urge local MPs to attend the debate to ensure it passed. However, the Labour Council refused to support the motion.
Nigel Martin said, "It is very disappointing that this Council chose not to support this motion. Almost a third of people in our area struggle to adequately heat their homes and something must be done about it.
"It is rather shameful that our MP plays party politics with such a serious issue and refuses to back the action needed for vulnerable residents in Durham."
