Lib Dems in Durham have strongly criticised the government for its announcement today of rises in student tuition fees and a reduction in help for students who need it most.
Grants given to help poorer students will be frozen for the first time and teacher training grants are to be cut under Labour plans outlined today.
Durham City's Labour MP works for the Universities Minister who made the announcement today. Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson Carol Woods said, "I am sure the thousands of students in Durham, as well as the thousands of local parents with children of University age will want to know how she can support this announcement.
"While Labour rushed to bail out the banks that helped cause this economic crisis in the first place, they have done nothing to help ordinary people. In fact, we are the ones being asked to foot the bill time and again. This time it is students - or, in most cases, the parents of students - who will have to bear the cost of this increase.
"The Liberal Democrats have opposed tuition fees from the outset and would scrap them as we did when in Government in Scotland. At a time when the job prospects for people graduating from University have never been poorer, it is a slap in face to saddle them with even greater debt.
"Let's not forget that Labour made an explicit promise not to introduce top-up fees and they broke that promise. They promised to help poorer families cover the cost of University but they are now breaking that promise.
"This is a Labour Party which has abandoned its roots and broken its promises on education."
