Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson Carol Woods has given her commitment to a new '10:10' environmental campaign and has called on the County Council to set a clear example by following suit.
The 10:10 campaign was recently launched with the support of national newspapers, leading politicians and celebrities and it calls on people, businesses and organisations to commit to cutting their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010.
Carol Woods has been a long-time environmental campaigner and she has signed up to support the campaign and outlined the steps she will make to save her 10%. Carol's three promises are:
1 Turn the heating down.
2 Do all my washing on a short, low temperature cycle
3 Buy local food where possible and save food miles.
Carol said, "I speak to so many people who really want to make a difference but they feel a little helpless. That's the beauty of this campaign - everyone can do their bit to reduce their carbon footprint by 10% next year. It's achievable and I'd like to see as many people take up the challenge as possible.
"This is such an important issue and while over the longer term we need to make much greater savings, we can all start by joining the 10:10 campaign. There are small changes we can all adopt to help make a difference.
"I would hope the new County Council will sign up to support this. As much as individuals can do, we need the big energy users to do their bit as well. Not only would energy efficiencies on this scale help save the environment, they would also save money. I will be writing to the Chief Executive and the Leader of the Council asking for them to make a firm commitment to this very worthy campaign.
"I would also recommend that people visit www.1010uk.org where they can learn more and sign up
