Liberal Democrats in Durham are celebrating a record year after signing up the most new members ever at the University Freshers Fayre which ended today.
With the General Election fight in Durham neck and neck between Labour and the Lib Dems, more students than ever have joined the Lib Dem cause.
Commenting on the popularity of the Lib Dems among students, Carol Woods said, "Our party is the natural home for students. We are the only party to oppose tuition fees, we are the leading campaigners on the environment and civil liberties and we are calling for the investment that will make it easier for all young people, students or otherwise, to get a job.
"Events such as the Freshers Fayre are vital for educating people that the choice in Durham is between Labour and the Lib Dems. Many students might not yet be aware that Conservatives cannot win here and it is important they learn that before casting their vote in the General Election. They want their first vote to be one that really counts and to beat Labour here that vote must be for the Lib Dems.
"It is clear from the record number of people we have signed up today and yesterday that there is a growing momentum behind the Lib Dems locally and an excitement about the coming election.
"I hope all the new students enjoy their time in Durham and I hope they play their part in voting for the change that this city needs at the General Election."
